James Teagle - The Eagle
This season has been a true mixed bag.
After finishing in the top 45 of the PTO rankings this year https://stats.protriathletes.org/rankings/men, I found myself just outside the T100 contracts, which align well with my preference for the 70.3 distance. Around the same time, IRONMAN seemed to shift its focus to long-distance events, which left me with a choice: stick with smaller 70.3 races or step up to the full IRONMAN distance. I decided to pursue the IRONMAN series, taking on the challenge of completing three IRONMAN races.
The season began on a high note with a 70.3 in Mallorca, where I ran a 1:09 off the bike—one of the fastest times recorded at the event. This effort earned me solid PTO ranking points, even with a 6th-place finish, due to the field’s high calibre.
From there, I moved into training for my first IRONMAN. The new challenge was both engaging and rewarding, and the race went exceptionally well. I set the British debut record of 7:46:15 in Vitoria, marking one of the fastest debut times at the IRONMAN distance. This was a major highlight of my season and an experience I thoroughly enjoyed.
However, the season took a downturn when I broke my finger, which prevented me from qualifying for the World 70.3 Championships. I also struggled to get my body back in shape for subsequent IRONMAN races and came to understand just how demanding these events are—a lesson I underestimated.
A highlight, however, was the chance to participate in the T100 series. This was an incredibly enjoyable experience that rekindled my passion for racing after a challenging stretch. Finishing 11th in my first T100 race has inspired me to pursue it further, and I’ll be aiming to secure wild cards for future races.
With one race left in Bahrain (70.3), it looks like I’ll be ranked in the 30s in the PTO rankings, which should put me in a good position to secure several wild cards for the T100 series next season.
Overall, this year has been a valuable period of learning, helping me refine my goals. Looking ahead to 2025, a key objective is breaking into the T100 series as a full-time contracted athlete. I plan to focus on racing in Nice and aim to balance the season with two full IRONMAN races alongside larger 70.3 events.
Please see my race calendar for 2025, this might change at points due to the PTO wild cards.
Feb-March I will be racing in the Spanish Duathlon League.
