In 2022 EZ Gains wanted to develop a lighter version of the EZ Disc. This then pushed us towards the option of Carbon, and we developed 3 prototypes to be used by athletes, one of them being Donald Brooks “AG World Champ” and Triathlon legend.

To develop the carbon light enough and cost-effective enough, we had to use two layers of resin-infused carbon sheets. This totalled a weight of around 300–350g. It was somewhat sturdy but still did not have the strength and rigidity of the EZ Disc.
EZ Gains then tried to reduce the weight even further to 250g by using only one carbon layer, but found it to be too weak and fragile, with pinholes throughout. This was not ideal, as it flexed with the wind, causing drag. The micro pinholes also added drag where air would get caught, and any impact could cause damage to the carbon. For something to be as aerodynamic as possible, it needs to be a solid object that doesn’t flex with the wind.
After testing with Donald Brooks, we also found that the cable tie design behind the cassette became very weak. Some of the ties ripped through the carbon due to rotational pressure from the wheel, making the carbon EZ Disc unsafe.
So based on all the above, we decided not to produce a carbon version of the EZ Disc, as the weight saving of around 100g would offer no benefit over any course, and in fact, the carbon version caused more drag.
In many cases, disc wheels are just rimmed wheels with a flat carbon layer stuck on top. The patent-protected shape of the EZ Disc helps manage airflow and adds structural strength to the wheel.
At this point, EZ Gains returned to our original supplier of the EZ Disc to develop a solution that could match the weight of a disc wheel through the combination of a rear wheel and an EZ Disc.
EZ Gains Developed the Ultimate Solution:
Wind tunnel testing was conducted on 31 January 2023 with independent engineers at Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub, witnessed by eight athletes:
Attended:
Jack Shayler (Pro Triathlete), Ben Redman (Top GB AG), Donald Brooks (Legend), Rosie Weston (Pro Triathlete), Max Bucky (GB AG), Clint Butcher (AG – Owner)
The Ultimate EZDisc Super Lite has been wind tunnel and rolling tested. It is as fast as a top-end disc wheel, made from a polycarbonate mix, and when combined with the right wheel, weighs just 400g–600g, a third lighter than the original EZDisc.
Summary of Key Benefits:
-
The new EZDisc Super Lite is as strong (or stronger) than a disc wheel and weighs as little as 400g–600g when added to your rear wheel.
-
Fully legal for racing, including Ironman, ISO accredited (unlike many competitors). Ironman regulations require bike components to be ISO-rated or similar to avoid disqualification.
-
Wind tunnel tested at Silverstone against a top-end disc wheel.
-
Proven to match or beat disc wheels when combined with a good rear wheel, requiring fewer watts using the same tyre under identical conditions.
-
Adds structure and stability to your setup and delivers the same satisfying “whoosh” of a disc wheel.
-
Offers aerodynamic benefits even in side and rear winds, with outdoor tests showing an average time saving of 2 minutes 30 seconds over a 90k course (hilly or flat).
-
You only need one wheel - no need to own a separate disc wheel. Plus, you can remove the EZDisc for travel or in races where discs are banned.
-
UK made - supports local suppliers, reinvests into the community, and backs youth and pro athletes alike.
-
Protected by patent, with thousands invested in securing the exact design fit.
-
Backed by a 2-year guarantee - if your EZDisc fails, we’ll exchange it.
In Short:
It’s as fast as a disc wheel, stronger than a disc wheel, and saves you from buying two wheels. An absolute no-brainer!
